Thursday, December 14th and Friday, December 15th, I attended the APAP’s WAVELENGTH world music pre-conference at the Hilton Hotel and made a short visit to the JazzConnect conference at Saint Peter’s Church in Manhattan. During the two days I distributed the MFM open meeting fliers at both locations and encouraged many musicians to come.
At WAVELENGTH I made “some noise” at various panels with my MFM related questions. Advocating strongly our slogan that making music is a profession. Surprisingly, after the panel, I got some positive responses from members of the audience and from some of the panelists and speakers.
After the panels I talked to speakers and panelists, including Dmitri Vietze (Rock Paper Scissors), Casey Merlin Rae (Future of Music Coalition), Ken Umezaki (Digital Daruma), Mark Steiner (GigSalad). Syria’s musician Kinan Azmeh, Bill Bragin (NYUAD Arts Center + globalFEST), Ashley Capps (Ace Entertainment), Diana Ezerins (Kennedy Center), Shanta Thake (Joe’s Pub + globalFEST), Fabian Alsultany (Wanderlust), Isabel Soffer (Live Sounds + globalFEST), Sami Abu Shumays (Flushing Town Hall), Neel Murgai, and Amir ElSaffar.
All of them were very excited to hear about MFM, interested to hear more about us and even showed genuine interest to be a part of our movement. With some of them I already discussed the possibility to invite them to MFM for a workshop or speech.
I also met and had the chance to chat with following musicians Richard & Paula Bennett, Welf Dorr, Brian Prunka, Samir Langus, Hassan Hakmoun, Wade Shuman, Porangui (Brazil), Saskia Laroo (Holland), WESLI (Canada), Dhalia Dumont & BUYEPONGO, Michela Musolino, and many others.
I also met and chatted with my friends from DROM, Serder Ilhan and Mehmet Dede, Meridian 23’s Stefan Andemicael, Meera Dugal (Artrium/Lincoln Center), Bannung Eyre & Sean Barlow of AfroPop; and Washington DC’s presenter and musician Jim Thomson.
Special thanks to Isabel Soffer, Neel Murgai (Brooklyn Raga Massive); and Jim Eigo (Jazz Promo Services) to distribute the MFM fliers at their booths.
